Adam's Flooring & Design—Salt Lake City, UT
Salt Lake City is the state capital and seat (1849) of Salt Lake County, located on the Jordan River at the southeastern end of the Great Salt Lake in north-central Utah. As the world capital of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), it has an impact on the social, economic, political, and cultural lives of people throughout Utah and the neighboring states of Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming.
The city, built on the benches of ancient Lake Bonneville, is located at the foot of the Wasatch Range, which rises more than 1 mile (1.6 km) above the Salt Lake valley floor. Salt Lake City is located in the heart of a mountain range area that includes Ogden to the north and Provo to the south.
The area’s first inhabitants were the Ute and Shoshone Indians. Brigham Young and a band of 148 Mormons founded the city in 1847 as a refuge from religious persecution, and it was known as Great Salt Lake City until 1868. Young designed the city based on Joseph Smith’s plan for the city of Zion. The city was divided into 10-acre (4-hectare) blocks that were connected by wide streets and center-ed on the Temple Block (now known as Temple Square).
Mormon immigrants from the East and Europe flocked to the Provisional State of Deseret (a Book of Mormon word interpreted as “honeybee”) to establish the “New Jerusalem,” the “City of the Saints.” The California Gold Rush of 1849 helped the city’s expansion.
Copper, gold, molybdenum, platinum, selenium, silver, lead, and zinc are mined near Salt Lake City, and the lake produces a variety of salts. The city has an international airport and is a regional trade and transportation hub. Government, education, health care, and financial and business services are all important parts of the economy.
High-tech industries and telecommunications are also important. Manufacturers include medical products, computer equipment, software, and aerospace products, as well as printing and publishing. With more than a dozen ski areas located near the city, tourism contributes significantly to the economy. It also serves as a trading, processing, and transportation hub for agricultural products sourced from nearby irrigated farmlands.
